I have also reduced my mailbox size in attempt to make mail osx happy. I have in fact, deleted my entire mailbox in the last week, and resync (rebuild) to gmail in attempt to have mail all happy. I cannot turn off the other 2 apps as I need them to do my work. I am currently turning mail OSX off unless i really need to send a message. I have done the safe reboot, SMC and still issues remain. Poor performance is observed (and machine gets loud) if I use Pathfinder, OSX mail or Dropbox sync alot.
